Unsaid Magazine

Unsaid Magazine is an editorial publication created to explore the hidden pressures, expectations and insecurities experienced by teenage girls. Through personal stories, interviews and visual storytelling, the magazine aims to challenge the gap between appearance and reality, encouraging readers to reflect on the things that often go unspoken.

Submitted as part of an University module, this project explores magazine design through concept development, editorial design, visual identity and publication production.

Unsaid was created as a response to the growing pressure placed on teenage girls by social media, beauty standards and societal expectations. While many magazines focus on aspiration and perfection, Unsaid seeks to create a more honest and relatable space where readers can recognise experiences that are often hidden beneath carefully curated appearances.

The title Unsaid reflects the themes at the centre of the publication: the emotions, thoughts and struggles that are rarely spoken about openly. Through features, interviews and reflective articles, the magazine encourages conversations around identity, self-image and growing up in a highly connected world.

Rather than presenting a perfect version of teenage life, Unsaid aims to build a sense of understanding and community. By sharing authentic experiences, the magazine reminds readers that many of the challenges they face are shared by others, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and encourage self-acceptance.

The Design

The visual identity of Unsaid is built around the contrast between what is visible and what remains hidden, reflecting the magazine's core concept.

Typography

Bold display typography is used to create impact and confidence, while carefully structured editorial typography ensures readability throughout the publication. Layered type treatments and varied scales help communicate the tension between outward appearance and internal thoughts.

Colour

The colour palette combines soft tones with high-contrast accents to reflect the balance between vulnerability and strength. These colours work together to create a visually engaging publication while maintaining a contemporary and youthful aesthetic.

Imagery

Photography and imagery focus on authenticity rather than perfection. Close-up portraits, expressive compositions and thoughtful visual details help communicate the emotional themes explored throughout the magazine.

Layout

The layouts shift between energetic, image-led spreads and quieter editorial pages. This variation creates rhythm throughout the publication and reflects the changing emotions and experiences discussed within the content.

Editorial Experience

Every design decision was made to support the magazine's central message: that there is often more happening beneath the surface than we choose to reveal. Unsaid aims to create an engaging reading experience that looks beautiful on the outside while encouraging readers to consider what remains hidden underneath.
